A recent study has found that organic egg production generates a significantly larger environmental footprint than eggs produced by caged hens. The research, led by Dr. Harriet Bartlett of Oxford University and published in Royal Society Open Science, highlights that while organic and free-range farming may improve animal welfare, they come with increased carbon emissions and greater land use.

The analysis revealed that organic eggs produce nearly twice the amount of CO2 compared to those from cage-based systems. Specifically, a full transition to organic egg production in the United Kingdom would increase emissions by approximately 60 percent and double the agricultural land required. The study estimates that if all UK eggs were both free-range and organic, annual CO2 emissions would reach around 2.3 million tons, nearly double the 1.18 million tons associated with battery cage farming for the same volume of eggs.

Battery cages were phased out across Europe in 2012, replaced by “enriched cages” designed to provide some amenities such as nesting and perching areas. However, hens in these systems remain housed in high densities, with up to 90 birds per cage—a condition that researchers note severely limits their quality of life. In contrast, free-range farms, which supply about 63 percent of eggs in the UK, require a minimum of four square meters of outdoor space per bird accessible during daylight hours. Organic farms maintain smaller flock sizes and feed hens with non-genetically modified crops.

The study points to lower crop yields from organic farming as a major factor behind the increased environmental impact. Organic hens require more feed per egg produced, and the crops supporting this feed—one of the largest contributors to egg farming’s carbon footprint—typically yield less than conventional farming methods. Free-range, non-organic systems, by comparison, emit 2.21 kilograms of CO2 per kilogram of eggs, only slightly higher than battery cage operations.

Dr. Bartlett emphasized the importance of balancing environmental sustainability with animal welfare, noting that “caged systems perform well for some environmental measures, but sustainability is about balancing a range of priorities.” The research suggests that free-range, non-organic egg production may offer a compromise by improving hen welfare while maintaining relatively modest environmental impacts compared to organic systems.
