A recent study on orphaned grizzly bear cubs released in British Columbia has raised concerns about the long-term success of rehabilitation efforts. The cubs, which had been raised on a diet supplemented with roadkill, watermelon, dog food, and other donations, were cared for by only two people to limit human contact. After spending up to a year in rehabilitation, the bears were released back into the wild.
Dr. Lana M. Ciarniello, a bear specialist who tracked several of these yearlings, explained that while releasing the bears is often viewed positively by the public, little follow-up monitoring is conducted to assess their survival. Her research found that of 12 bears that could be tracked after release, only two survived beyond their first year in the wild. Most died before completing their first winter hibernation, indicating a troubling pattern of post-release mortality.
Dr. Ciarniello suggested that the bears, having been fed a rich diet before release, became significantly larger than typical wild-reared yearlings—about 3.5 times their normal size. This increased mass may have made it difficult for them to maintain their calorie requirements in their natural environment. Additionally, some bears exhibited behaviors or physical conditions that could contribute to their premature deaths.
The study highlights the complexity of wildlife rehabilitation and the unintended consequences that well-meaning human interventions can sometimes produce. While the intention is to return orphaned bears to the wild, the approach may need reevaluation to improve the animals’ long-term survival rates.
In a separate note on marine wildlife, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates that approximately 370,000 tonnes of octopus are harvested annually, primarily off the coasts of Morocco and Mauritania. China and Japan represent the largest markets, while Spain consumes about 40,000 tonnes each year, averaging nearly one kilogram per person. Climate change and rising ocean temperatures have also contributed to shifts in octopus populations, with regions such as the United Kingdom experiencing significant blooms unrecorded since the 1950s.
