CHICAGO — The Baltimore Orioles rallied late to secure a 4-2 comeback victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday afternoon, clinching a series win at Rate Field. The decisive runs came in the eighth inning, propelled by a two-run home run from Gunnar Henderson.
Baltimore’s offense struggled for much of the game, managing to strand a dozen base runners through the first seven innings amidst challenging playing conditions. Runs have been scarce for the Orioles throughout the early part of the season, and this performance initially appeared to be among their most frustrating.
The breakthrough occurred in the eighth inning when Blaze Alexander and Taylor Ward hit consecutive doubles to tie the game. Henderson then followed with a two-run blast, putting the Orioles ahead for the first time. The victory improved the Orioles' record to 5-6 and positioned them for a potential sweep on Wednesday, which would bring their record back to .500.
The game, which was moved to the afternoon slot to mitigate freezing temperatures, began with a first-pitch reading of 36 degrees Fahrenheit. This marked the Orioles' coldest game since April 18, 2018, in Detroit, and tied for their third-lowest temperature on record. The combination of clear skies and the early start time cast large shadows across the infield from Rate Field’s upper deck, creating an environment that favored pitching.
Despite the team's offensive woes, Orioles ace Trevor Rogers delivered a strong performance from the mound. The left-hander pitched six innings, allowing only two runs and scattering six hits while striking out six batters and issuing no walks. His outing lowered his early-season ERA to an impressive 1.89, with his deceptive pitches even leading to a strikeout of White Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi on a sinker that made contact with Benintendi's arm.
