The Canadian federal government is preparing to officially designate a proposed West Coast oil pipeline as a project of national interest, Energy Minister Tim Hodgson confirmed. The announcement is expected by Thursday, marking a significant step in advancing the project through an expedited regulatory process.

The pipeline forms a central component of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s agenda to recalibrate federal-provincial relations, particularly with Alberta, and to broaden Canada’s export markets beyond the United States. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to enhance infrastructure development and economic diversification.

This designation falls under the Building Canada Act, legislation introduced by the Liberal government early last year. The act allows projects deemed vital to the national interest to benefit from accelerated reviews designed to improve regulatory certainty and boost investor confidence. The federal Major Projects Office (MPO), based in Calgary, is responsible for managing the designation process.

In May, the government initially set a target date of Oct. 1 to grant the pipeline national interest status. Once designated, the project will move forward with streamlined environmental and regulatory considerations, potentially reducing delays that often affect large-scale infrastructure projects.

Supporters argue that the pipeline will provide economic benefits, including job creation and increased opportunities for Canadian energy exports, particularly to markets on the Pacific Rim. Critics, however, have expressed concerns about environmental risks and Indigenous rights, issues that have frequently surrounded pipeline developments in Canada.
