Sydney’s north shore is set to become home to Australia’s first new cathedral in over 100 years, with plans unveiled to construct a major place of worship and accompanying precinct at Waitara. The development will serve the Diocese of Broken Bay, which includes the Central Coast, northern beaches, and north shore regions, encompassing approximately 250,000 Catholics across 26 parishes.
The project will occupy a 7.7-hectare site and is designed to integrate education and community services alongside the cathedral itself, creating a hub intended to support both religious practice and broader community engagement. Archbishop Anthony Randazzo emphasized the precinct’s role as “a home for faith, a place for community, and a commitment to the faithful of today and for future generations.” He noted that the design aims to embody a “visible and living heart for diocesan life,” fostering worship, formation, pastoral care, outreach, and administrative functions in service of the wider community.
The architectural firm chosen to lead the project is London-based Niall McLaughlin Architects, selected through an international competition process. The firm has garnered recognition for previous projects, including the design of a new museum at Bethany Beyond the Jordan—a UNESCO World Heritage site in Jordan believed to be the location of Jesus Christ’s baptism.
According to Niall McLaughlin, the Sydney cathedral will incorporate sustainable and responsibly sourced materials, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship. The design also includes rooftop gardens intended to enhance biodiversity and complement the existing blue gum forest on the site, integrating natural elements with the built environment.
The cathedral’s construction represents a significant development for Australia’s Catholic community, marking the first new cathedral build in the country in more than a century and aiming to create a multifaceted precinct that supports spiritual life alongside educational and social services. Further details regarding the timeline and funding for the project are yet to be disclosed.
