This shift reflects broader societal changes and challenges longstanding architectural conventions.
Demographic trends illustrate the changing structure of households. In Britain, nearly 30 percent of households in 2024 consist of a single person, a rise from previous decades. At the same time, an aging population has contributed to a resurgence of multigenerational living arrangements, often in new and unconventional forms. Widowed friends may share residences, non-traditional couples reorganize living spaces fluidly, and many homes adapt to fluctuating financial circumstances.
The domestic environment is also expanding to include a variety of non-human inhabitants. Pet ownership remains widespread in the United States, with 71 percent of households having at least one animal. The pet economy is substantial, valued at $158 billion, surpassing the GDP of some countries. Younger generations, particularly Gen Z, often prioritize spending on their pets, with many regarding animals as family members. Likewise, plants have assumed increasing importance, shifting from mere decoration to active domestic participants. Urban dwellers commonly dedicate time and effort to cultivating indoor plants, investing in specialized equipment and monitoring conditions to nurture them.
Technological advancements further blur the lines between occupants and environment. Conversational assistants like Alexa, and AI models such as ChatGPT and Gemini, have become integrated into everyday routines, eliciting complex emotional responses including dependence and companionship. The emergence of physical robots, such as autonomous vacuum cleaners like the Roomba, exemplifies the proliferation of non-human helpers. In parts of Asia, humanoid robots are beginning to function as caregivers and companions, marking a new phase in domestic automation and social interaction.
Historically, domestic spaces coexisted closely with natural elements—animals, microbes, and plants lived alongside humans in early settlements. This relationship changed dramatically with the rise of modernist ideals that emphasized hygiene, sterilization, and separation from nature, framing homes as highly controlled environments. However, contemporary thinkers argue for a reimagining of the home as a dynamic ecosystem rather than a sealed, impersonal machine. This conception advocates for embracing unpredictability and interaction among diverse inhabitants, both biological and technological.
This broadened perspective on domestic life takes inspiration from the concept of “polyamory” not in the romantic sense, but as a metaphor for multiple forms of coexistence within the home. It encompasses humans, pets, microbes, plants, insects, and robots living together in a shared space. The approach aligns with ecological principles that acknowledge interconnectedness among organisms and environments, as well as the One Health framework, which recognizes human health as intertwined with the entire ecosystem.
Architects and designers are encouraged to adopt new principles to accommodate this complexity. They must create environments that allow for flexibility and unexpected interactions, remove rigid boundaries between inhabitants and their surroundings, and actively manage the domestic ecosystem much like a gardener tends a garden—pruning, nurturing, and balancing diverse elements for harmonious coexistence.
This evolving view challenges the traditional role of architecture, shifting from protective enclosure to fostering entanglement and integration with the wider environment. The vision for future homes is one of adaptability, inclusivity, and interspecies collaboration, reflecting broader changes in society and technology.
