Data from the health-tracking company Oura has identified the most physiologically stressful days experienced by users across the United States and in New York City over the past year, spanning from July 1, 2025, to June 20, 2026. The metrics, drawn from more than 5 million subscribers wearing Oura rings, offer insights into how various events and conditions impact bodily stress levels.

Oura rings gauge stress by monitoring physiological signals such as heart rate, heart rate variability, and body temperature. These indicators reflect the body's activation levels rather than subjective emotional states, meaning that both excitement and stress manifest similarly in the data. Shyamal Patel, Oura’s senior vice president of science, explained that heightened physiological activation can arise from a range of factors including poor sleep, illness, alcohol consumption, dehydration, hormonal fluctuations, caffeine intake, social interactions, travel, or disruptions from normal routines.

According to the data, May 16, 2026, stood out as the most stressful day nationwide and for New York residents. In New York, the onset of a Long Island Rail Road strike impacted up to 300,000 commuters, who faced either costly alternative transportation options or significantly extended travel times. Despite the day's favorable weather—a warm and breezy late spring day—physiological stress levels were high, potentially reflecting participants’ extended social activities such as late nights and alcohol consumption.

Sporting events also appeared to contribute to stress levels. Two of the ten most stressful days for New Yorkers coincided with NBA Finals games. Notably, Game 5, when the New York Knicks secured their first championship in 53 years against the San Antonio Spurs, registered as the second most stressful day in the city.

Holiday celebrations emerged as significant stressors as well. New Year’s Eve ranked third on the list, with roughly one million people gathered in Times Square to watch the traditional ball drop. According to Patel, the prominence of major holidays among the top stressful days illustrates how high-stimulation social occasions can elevate physiological stress, even when associated with positive emotions.

Overall, the Oura data underscores the complex nature of stress as measured by bodily responses, highlighting how both challenging and enjoyable experiences can impose significant demands on physical systems.
