Alex Ovechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer and captain of the Washington Capitals, has decided to continue his professional hockey career for at least one more season. The announcement came last week, with Ovechkin preparing to enter the 2026-27 NHL season at age 41, which will feature an expanded 84-game schedule.

Ovechkin credited his wife, Nastya, as a key influence in his decision to return. Speaking publicly on Monday, he described how discussions with his family and especially his wife helped solidify his plan to extend his playing days. “She’s like, ‘Okay, let’s play one more year, or maybe two years, I don’t know,’” he said.

Following his family’s encouragement, Ovechkin quickly engaged Washington Capitals’ General Manager Chris Patrick to negotiate contract terms. The two reportedly finalized an agreement within about 10 minutes, with Ovechkin affirming his readiness to contribute both on and off the ice. “I still can play and bring energy to the locker room, energy on the ice and give the result that I can give,” he said.

This extension marks another chapter in Ovechkin’s distinguished NHL tenure, during which he has established himself as one of the sport’s most prolific goal scorers and a central figure for the Capitals. His decision to continue playing comes as the league prepares to increase the number of regular-season games, potentially demanding greater endurance from veteran players.

The Capitals and their fans will look to Ovechkin’s leadership and performance as he embarks on what could be the final seasons of his career.
