At Farncombe Down Stables, horse trainer Owen Burrows expressed confidence in the prospects of his four-year-old colt Gethin ahead of the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park. Burrows, who previously spent 12 years working under Sir Michael Stoute, has maintained a composed approach while preparing Gethin for one of the summer’s prominent flat races.
Following the death of Sheikh Hamdan in 2021, Burrows faced significant challenges that included making staff redundancies. To sustain his operation, he diversified his clientele by welcoming new owners into his yard, a strategy that has since yielded promising results with horses like Gethin. The colt has shown early promise in his career and recently demonstrated strong form by finishing just a neck behind the well-regarded Ombudsman in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes.
Gethin is regarded by Burrows as a horse suited to distances between 10 and 12 furlongs. Burrows highlighted that with the right race setup—including the use of a pacemaker—Gethin could be competitive in the Coral-Eclipse. He noted that the track at Sandown is favorable to Gethin’s running style and that the horse is drawn in a good position for the race.
Despite the optimism, Burrows cautioned that the field will be highly competitive and underlined the need for Gethin to deliver his best performance to claim victory. The upcoming Coral-Eclipse, scheduled for July, is expected to attract a strong lineup, and Burrows’s measured confidence reflects the challenge ahead for his colt.
