Oxford City secured a 1-0 victory over Bedford Town on the opening day of the season, with Ludwig Francillette’s late header proving decisive in a closely contested match held on Saturday. The game saw both sides create opportunities, but it was Francillette’s aerial finish that broke the deadlock in the final 15 minutes.

Bedford Town began the match strongly, quickly earning several corners as they sought to impose themselves early on. Despite this early pressure, Oxford City generated the clearer scoring chances in the first half. Ty Marsh, playing against his former club, tested Bedford’s goalkeeper Laurie Walker with a diving header in the 15th minute. Subsequent to that, Matty Taylor also came close, but Walker was again on hand to deny a close-range effort with an impressive save.

Bedford Town had a notable opportunity on the verge of halftime when David Hicks crossed into the box, but Eno Nto’s finishing attempt sailed over the bar, allowing Oxford City to escape without conceding before the interval.

The second half featured fewer clear-cut chances, although Oxford City’s goalkeeper Jonny Maxted was required to make a timely intervention early on, punching away a threatened shot by George Moncur.

The match’s winning moment arrived with around 15 minutes remaining. Oxford City played a long ball forward, which was flicked toward the back post. Francillette, timing his jump well, headed the ball past Walker to give the visitors the lead. Bedford Town came close to an equalizer moments later when Walker produced an outstanding save to tip another header onto the crossbar. His save prevented an immediate response, as Dillon De Silva’s follow-up attempt narrowly missed the target.

Oxford City held on for a vital opening victory, boosting their confidence as they begin their campaign, while Bedford Town will look to build on their competitive performance in future fixtures.
