Oxford United secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Watford on Sunday, bolstering their chances of avoiding relegation in the closing stages of the season. The match, held at Oxford’s home ground, saw the hosts take an early lead through Myles Peart-Harris in the 19th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball following a Cameron Brannagan free-kick that Watford’s defense failed to clear.

The game remained tightly contested until stoppage time, when substitute Mark Harris sealed the win with a swift counterattack, finishing with a low shot past Watford goalkeeper Egil Selvik. This marked Oxford’s first win in five matches, a result that temporarily lifted them out of the relegation zone, though they remain precariously positioned in 22nd place after Portsmouth’s late victory against Middlesbrough.

Oxford United manager Matt Bloomfield described the win as “a massive result” but emphasized that his team still faces significant challenges ahead. “We’re still below the (relegation) line and still have a lot of work to do,” Bloomfield said, adding that the victory gives his side “a real chance” to climb to safety.

Watford entered the fixture on a three-game winless streak and were unable to replicate their earlier season success against Oxford, having won 2-1 at Vicarage Road in their previous encounter. Watford manager Ed Still acknowledged his team’s shortcomings in the match, pointing to a lack of aggression and an inability to meet the heightened intensity typical of late-season battles for survival. “We haven’t been good enough. We haven’t matched Oxford in terms of aggression, in terms of adapting to this type of game at this time of the season,” Still said, noting that the physical and mental demands at this stage had proven challenging for his side.

As the season approaches its final rounds, Oxford’s victory represents a pivotal step in their fight to remain in the league, while Watford faces mounting pressure to improve in order to climb out of the relegation zone.
