Spain secured a 3-0 victory over Austria on Thursday to advance to the last 16 of the World Cup with a commanding performance. The European champions maintained their strong defensive record by not conceding a goal in their four matches so far, joining co-hosts Mexico and title holders Argentina in that achievement.
Real Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal played a pivotal role, opening the scoring in the 39th minute and adding a second goal in the 89th minute, bringing his tournament tally to four. Pedro Porro contributed with a headed goal in the 66th minute. Both Oyarzabal’s goals were set up by Marc Cucurella, who was also instrumental in creating Porro’s strike. Spain came close to further extending their lead when Alex Baena’s free-kick struck the crossbar and star forward Lamine Yamal had a late shot cleared off the goal line.
Austria, participating in their first World Cup knockout match since 1954, struggled to pose a significant threat to Spain’s defense. Their most notable chance came in the 61st minute from substitute Sasa Kalajdvic, whose header went over the crossbar. Kalajdvic had been instrumental in Austria’s progression, scoring a stoppage-time equalizer against Algeria in the group stage.
Former England striker Dion Dublin, commenting on the match, highlighted Austria’s brief offensive moments in the first half but emphasized Spain’s professionalism and control throughout the game. Dublin noted that Austria’s failure to capitalize on their chances, coupled with Spain’s ability to punish turnovers, underscored the quality displayed by the Spanish side.
With this win, Spain will face Portugal in the last 16 on Monday. Portugal’s opponent will be either Cristiano Ronaldo’s team or Luka Modric’s Croatia, who were scheduled to play their round of 16 match later on Thursday.
