On a quiet beach in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, conservation biologists are marking a significant milestone in the recovery of the American oystercatcher, a shorebird species once nearly wiped out in the region. Known for their bright orange bills and distinctive calls, these birds had largely disappeared from New England by the early 20th century due to hunting and egg collecting. However, recent efforts have contributed to a notable rebound in their population along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

The banding activities taking place at the 787-acre Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge are part of a larger nationwide initiative aimed at restoring the oystercatcher’s numbers. Biologists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, along with partners from 35 coastal organizations across 16 states, have spent more than a decade raising roughly $10 million to support conservation measures. These measures include educating the public about the birds’ nesting sites and the importance of protecting them from human disturbance, pets, and predators in coastal habitats such as beaches, sand dunes, salt marshes, and tide wrack deposits.

Since 2008, the American oystercatcher population in these areas has increased by 45%, a notable achievement given that a 2023 study found most other North American shorebird species are continuing to decline. Biologists involved credit the collaborative approach and targeted conservation actions for this success.

“It really demonstrates how much you can accomplish when there is a dedicated group of partners that can come together and identify the needs of the species and implement conservation actions,” said Maureen Durkin, a federal wildlife biologist leading the banding efforts at the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex. She emphasized that the recovery reflects a sustained and committed investment over many years.

A key insight underpinning the conservation strategy was identifying chick survival as the primary factor limiting population growth. Tailored management plans were developed for individual sites by members of the American Oystercatcher Working Group, led by Manomet Conservation Sciences. The group’s founding biologist, Shiloh Schulte, conducted early aerial surveys that revealed double-digit declines in the species' numbers. Schulte tragically passed away last year in a helicopter crash during a shorebird protection mission in Alaska.

Conservationists recognize that varying local threats—including recreational disturbances, predator pressures, and environmental challenges such as sea level rise and dune erosion—require site-specific responses. “At one site, it might be recreational disturbance, at another site it might be predators, at another site it might be sea level rise or loss of dune structure that’s causing overwash events that are causing nest failure,” said Alan Kneidel, senior conservation biologist with Manomet. Kneidel’s team continues to monitor and adapt strategies as necessary.

The ongoing recovery of the American oystercatcher stands as a promising example of effective conservation in a time when many shorebird species remain at risk.
