The award-winning production Paddington: The Musical is set to debut in Sydney in September 2027, with a 10-week run scheduled at the Capitol Theatre. The musical, which has been running in London’s West End since 2025, is based on Michael Bond’s 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington and draws inspiration from recent film adaptations. Details regarding performances in other Australian cities and the Australian cast have yet to be announced.

Paddington: The Musical follows the story of the beloved bear from Peru who is taken in by the Brown family near London’s Paddington Station. The show has garnered widespread critical acclaim, receiving numerous five-star reviews. Notably, its innovative portrayal of Paddington uses a sophisticated animatronic puppet, designed by costume designer Tahra Zafar. In the London production, the character is brought to life by James Hameed, who provides the voice and operates the puppet remotely, while Arti Shah performs in the costume.

The production has been highly decorated, winning seven Olivier Awards in 2026, including best new musical, best set design, and a joint best actor award for Hameed and Shah, setting a record for the most Olivier wins for a musical. Additionally, it secured nine WhatsOnStage awards and the Critics’ Circle award for best new musical. The show will remain in London through at least 2028 and is scheduled to open on Broadway in April 2027.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Eliza Lumley expressed enthusiasm about the Sydney transfer, citing the city’s strong interest in world-class musical theatre and Australians’ longstanding affection for the Paddington character. They emphasized the importance of staging the show in locations where it could be produced with the same level of ambition and theatrical quality as in London. The producers also highlighted the story’s themes of kindness, acceptance, and belonging as particularly meaningful for Australian audiences.

Composer Tom Fletcher described his involvement with the musical as “the greatest adventure” of his career. Fletcher, who has toured Australia multiple times, expressed excitement about bringing the show to Sydney and sharing the character with Australian audiences.

Paddington: The Musical represents a significant addition to the Australian theatre landscape, promising a blend of innovative puppetry and heartfelt storytelling that has already captivated audiences abroad.
