Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has been moved into a dementia care facility in Florida amid an ongoing FBI investigation into allegations of possession of child abuse material. The 82-year-old former Hollywood lighting director’s relocation to a specialized “memory care” home occurred on Friday, coinciding with reports that a second large cache of such material was discovered in a storage unit near his former residence in Rosarito, Mexico.

The FBI probe began after Thomas Markle Jr., the son of Markle Sr., handed over items from his father’s belongings that contained alleged child abuse images. The investigation expanded to include two separate hoards: one reportedly found in the Philippines and another recently uncovered in Mexico. Authorities in both countries, including Philippine police with assistance from the FBI, are involved in the case. The Philippine National Police confirmed ongoing cooperation with U.S. investigators.

Legal experts have indicated that Markle Sr.’s dementia diagnosis could complicate the FBI’s ability to question him. According to a Florida-based attorney familiar with similar cases, individuals diagnosed with cognitive impairments are generally unable to “knowingly and intelligently” waive their rights, which is required for statements to be admissible in court. The attorney noted that any request to interview a patient in a memory care facility would require medical clearance and judicial approval, and the facility's physicians could intervene to block such moves.

Markle Sr. has a history of health issues, including a stroke in 2022 and emergency surgery resulting in a leg amputation late last year. Following these events, he moved with Thomas Markle Jr. to the Philippines before returning to the U.S. for further treatment. Prior to his transfer to the Florida care home, he resided in an upscale rehabilitation center known for its spa-like amenities and recreational facilities.

The recent cache discovered in Mexico reportedly included numerous photographs, videotapes, and digital media. Among the materials were black-and-white photographs purportedly showing young girls, some allegedly linked to Markle Sr. dating back several decades. Items seized from the Rosarito unit also included books and magazines, some with titles suggestive of inappropriate content.

Family responses have varied. Thomas Markle Sr. has strongly denied all allegations, calling them “a bunch of lies” and asserting that he is not guilty of any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, his sister, Samantha Markle, who facilitated his move to the new care home, described the facility as “wonderful” and emphasized that the transfer was made for his safety. She was seen recently bringing fresh linens to the residence, which reportedly has 24/7 supervision.

As investigations continue, the FBI and Philippine authorities have expressed readiness to extend mutual assistance. The case remains active, with legal and medical considerations expected to influence the next investigative steps.
