Pakistani airstrikes targeting militant hideouts in Afghanistan killed at least 10 civilians overnight, according to Afghan officials and the United Nations, marking a continuation of the ongoing cross-border conflict between the two countries.
The strikes occurred in the southern province of Helmand and the eastern province of Kunar. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirmed that most of the civilian casualties were children. The Pakistani Ministry of Information stated that the airstrikes were aimed at militant positions, reporting that 22 militants were killed; however, this figure could not be independently verified. The ministry did not immediately address reports of civilian deaths.
These attacks come amid a series of cross-border clashes which have intensified since early 2026. The two neighbors have long-standing tensions over militant activity along their shared border. Pakistan asserts that its strikes are targeted at groups responsible for attacks inside its territory, particularly the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a Pakistani Taliban faction it says operates from Afghan soil. Pakistan describes the strikes as “well planned and calibrated” operations against militant hideouts and camps.
Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government denies harboring militants, rejecting Pakistan’s allegations. Zabiullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban government, condemned the strikes as acts of aggression and violations of internationally accepted principles.
Cross-border violence has had significant humanitarian consequences. UNAMA reported that over 1,100 civilians have been killed or injured in Afghanistan so far this year due to cross-border incidents. Both sides continue to blame each other as diplomatic relations remain strained.
Pakistan accuses the Afghan Taliban government of allowing the TTP to operate freely within Afghanistan, though the two groups, while allied, maintain organizational separation. The Taliban government denies these claims, maintaining that it does not provide sanctuary to militants who threaten Pakistan.
The continuation of Pakistani airstrikes and the resulting civilian casualties underscore the persistent volatility along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and the challenges in reaching a lasting resolution to the security issues in the region.
