A 17-year-old Palestinian footballer died on Sunday, a week after being wounded in an attack by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, officials and relatives said. Fadi Hamdallah al-Nassan, who played for Al-Mughayyir Club and was a member of the Palestinian national youth team, succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident on July 11.

Dozens of mourners dressed in black carried al-Nassan’s body from the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah to his home village for burial. According to the Palestine Football Association, al-Nassan was shot in the thigh while settlers attacked his village. The injury led to the amputation of his leg, but he later died due to complications from the wounds.

His father, Hamdallah al-Nassan, described the circumstances surrounding the shooting, saying his son had rushed to help during the attack after hearing the screams of women and girls. “He loved football,” the father said. “When the settlers attacked, he heard the screams of the girls and women. He went to the scene of the attack and was killed.”

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported additional details, indicating that two other Palestinian residents were injured by rubber bullets fired by Israeli forces during the same incident, and a 10-year-old boy was struck in the head by a stun grenade.

The Israeli military had not issued a response to requests for comment as of Monday.

This attack comes amid an uptick in violence across the West Bank since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. According to data compiled from the Palestinian health ministry, Israeli soldiers or settlers have killed at least 1,088 Palestinians in the West Bank since that time, including both militants and civilians.

Conversely, official Israeli statistics indicate that at least 46 Israelis—both civilians and soldiers—have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war.

The rising violence has fueled tensions and deepened the humanitarian and security challenges in the region, with recurring clashes between Israeli settlers, Palestinian residents, and security forces.
