Code enforcement officers in Palmdale made a significant narcotics discovery last week while investigating an illegal dumping complaint. Upon responding to a vacant lot near the intersection of 110th Street East and Avenue M-8 in the unincorporated area of Lake Los Angeles, roughly 36 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, authorities found a methamphetamine manufacturing lab inside a cargo container, along with more than 800 pounds of the drug.
The seizure led to a multi-agency operation involving the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles Police Department, the county Department of Public Health, and the district attorney’s office. Alejandro Hernandez Gutierrez, 22, was taken into custody on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance.
Palmdale officials described the find as one of the largest methamphetamine busts in recent years. Mayor Eric Ohlsen emphasized the role of the city’s code enforcement team, noting that what began as a routine investigation into illegal dumping resulted in the removal of a substantial amount of dangerous drugs from the community.
According to authorities, the cargo container contained not only a large quantity of methamphetamine but also materials and photographic evidence pointing to various stages of narcotics production. Captain Bobby Dean of the sheriff’s narcotics bureau underscored the complexity of the operation, highlighting that the initial call evolved into uncovering a sophisticated drug manufacturing enterprise capable of producing and distributing significant volumes of methamphetamine.
Dean also cautioned about the unpredictable and hazardous conditions faced by law enforcement personnel during such investigations, reflecting on the risks encountered while safeguarding the public. The incident remains under investigation as officials work to dismantle the criminal network involved.
