The New York Islanders secured a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night, with Kyle Palmieri scoring twice to help the team reach an even record early in the season. The game took place at the Islanders' home rink, concluding their current homestand.
Head coach Pete DeBoer’s team demonstrated resilience and composure, particularly in the third period, when they applied sustained pressure and maintained control despite a challenging middle frame. After building a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Islanders faced a momentum shift as Max Sasson scored for Vancouver at 7:52 of the second period, cutting the lead in half. The Canucks quickly tied the game after Palmieri tripped Liam Ohrgren, resulting in a power play goal by Brock Boeser late in the period. The Islanders also incurred a penalty from Tony DeAngelo following a check on Sasson after the horn, putting additional pressure on the team before the intermission.
However, unlike past struggles in similar situations, the Islanders managed to kill off the penalty and regain their composure heading into the final period. DeBoer credited the team’s performance adjustment between periods, saying the Islanders “deserved to win that game with how we played in the third period.”
Veteran defenseman Matthew Schaefer played a key role in generating offensive pressure early in the third period, with his efforts leading to Palmieri’s game-winning goal. This was the top line’s first multi-goal effort at even strength this season, breaking a scoring drought in the Islanders' early games.
Matias Maccelli also contributed significantly after a line adjustment placed him alongside Casey Cizikas and Simon Holmstrom on the fourth line. Maccelli scored a goal late in the first period, his shot coming from the left circle off a feed from Schaefer, helping to extend the Islanders’ lead. Maccelli’s performance was praised as impactful for the team’s momentum.
Palmieri’s first goal of the game was a tip-in off a point shot by Matt Kessell, marking his first goal since November 18, 2025, shortly before undergoing ACL surgery. He closed the game with the decisive goal, underscoring his return to form.
In the final minutes, Vancouver attempted to mount a comeback and even seemed poised to pull goaltender Leevi Merilainen for an extra attacker. However, Emil Heineman drew a critical penalty on Vancouver’s Zeev Buium, allowing the Islanders to maintain possession and prevent any late equalizing attempts. DeBoer highlighted the importance of puck control in protecting the lead, stating, “The best defense when you have a lead is to keep the puck in the other team’s end.”
With the win, the Islanders improved their standing and showed signs of overcoming past tendencies to play down to weaker opponents. Vancouver, meanwhile, continues to struggle, with only two wins in their opening eight games.
