The wreckage of a Pan Am airliner that crashed off the coast of Puerto Rico 74 years ago has been located, shedding light on a pivotal event in aviation safety history. The discovery of the DC-4 aircraft, known as the Clipper Endeavor, comes nearly three-quarters of a century after the accident on Good Friday in 1952, which claimed 52 lives and influenced the development of standardized passenger safety briefings now routine on commercial flights worldwide.

The Clipper Endeavor went down in over 2,000 feet of water after an emergency water landing. All 17 survivors—12 passengers and five crew members—reported that while they managed to survive the initial impact, panic and confusion prevented many from quickly evacuating the aircraft, contributing to the high fatality count. Passengers struggled to locate life vests, and flight attendants encountered difficulty deploying life rafts before the plane sank within minutes.

The tragedy served as a crucial impetus for enhancing in-flight safety measures. Aviation safety expert John Cox noted that the crash underscored the need for clearly communicated preflight safety briefings and improved flotation equipment, reforms that now form the foundation of passenger safety protocols across the industry.

The plane’s resting place was located last month through the use of an autonomous sonar drone deployed by explorers off the Puerto Rican coast. The search followed extensive archival research by Russ Matthews, who was inspired to investigate the crash further after a luggage tag from the flight washed ashore in Florida in 2019. Matthews and his team scoured records from Pan Am, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Civil Aeronautics Board, the predecessor to the Federal Aviation Administration, to piece together the likely crash site.

A crucial lead came from Puerto Rican government hearing records and a map created by Air Force pilots who witnessed the crash during a nearby training mission. Initial attempts to find the wreck in early 2024 were hindered by adverse weather and conducted with towed sonar arrays. However, Matthews and his Air/Sea Heritage Foundation collaborators remained committed to a second effort using more advanced military-grade underwater drone technology.

The opportunity arose in April when Deep Sea Vision, an undersea exploration company, happened to operate a vessel equipped with the necessary sonar capabilities near Puerto Rico. Using a synthesized search area based on archived data and weather conditions of the time, the autonomous drone confirmed the wreckage on its initial scan, though the discovery was only understood once the device returned to the surface.

Beyond its historical significance, the discovery offers renewed hope for locating other aircraft lost at sea, such as Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which vanished over the Indian Ocean in 2014 with 269 people on board. The Clipper Endeavor’s story serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges and advancements in aviation safety and marine exploration alike.
