The wreckage of a Pan Am flight that crashed into the ocean off Puerto Rico in 1952 has been located by searchers more than seven decades after the accident that claimed 52 lives and played a pivotal role in shaping modern airline safety procedures. The aircraft, known as the Clipper Endeavor, went down shortly after takeoff due to the loss of engine power.
The Douglas DC-4 had suffered the failure of two engines soon after leaving the runway. Among the 69 people on board, 17 passengers and crew survived the initial splashdown. Survivors reported that everyone had lived through the water landing; however, panic ensued as many passengers had difficulty finding life vests and the crew struggled to deploy life rafts. The plane sank beneath the waves within minutes, leaving 39 victims unrecovered.
The discovery of the wreckage came in June 2026 after a concerted search effort led by Russ Matthews, president of the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, and supported by the undersea exploration firm Deep Sea Vision. The team utilized an autonomous sonar drone equipped with advanced sensors capable of scanning the ocean floor at depths exceeding 600 meters. The drone located the fuselage and tail section during its initial pass over a mapped search zone roughly 34 square kilometers in size.
Key to the search was the integration of historical data, including records from a 1952 hearing in Puerto Rico and an estimated crash location charted by United States Air Force pilots who had witnessed the incident while on a nearby training flight. Matthews and his team synthesized this information with weather data from the day of the accident to narrow the search area. Coincidentally, a Deep Sea Vision ship carrying the appropriate drone fortuitously passed near Puerto Rico in April, allowing the expedition to proceed.
The investigation into the Clipper Endeavor crash had long-lasting impacts on commercial aviation safety. Aviation experts note the disaster was instrumental in prompting reforms that led to the mandatory passenger safety briefings now familiar on virtually every flight. These briefings instruct travelers on the locations of emergency exits and life vests and how to use flotation devices effectively. The Federal Aviation Administration also contributed to advancing safety protocols in the wake of this and similar incidents.
The search and discovery were documented by the crew of a television expedition team, capturing the moment the wreckage images appeared on their monitor. Observers described an emotional reaction as the identification of the plane’s remains became clear.
