China’s official media has released a series of articles emphasizing the strength and future prospects of the country’s economy under its 15th Five-Year Plan, coinciding with a notable meeting between President Xi Jinping and former U.S. President Donald Trump. The 10-day series, published by the People’s Daily from September 25 through the National Day holiday, appeared under the pen name “Jinxuan,” a pseudonym widely associated with the National Development and Reform Commission, China’s top economic planning agency.
The articles outlined key economic priorities for the 2026–2030 period, highlighting emerging growth sectors such as the BeiDou satellite navigation system, artificial intelligence, and biomanufacturing. They also emphasized the importance of stimulating domestic demand and expanding the private sector, portraying these areas as critical to sustaining China’s economic momentum and resilience amid global uncertainties.
One piece noted China’s extensive manufacturing infrastructure, a large consumer base, considerable market capacity, advanced infrastructure networks, and a skilled workforce as foundational pillars supporting continued growth. The commentary underscored that China’s industrial and supply chains have become more secure and resilient, increasing confidence in the country’s ability to manage a range of risks and challenges.
The publication of the series appears timed to shape domestic and international perceptions ahead of the fifth plenary session of the Chinese Communist Party’s 20th Central Committee, scheduled for October 26 to 29. This meeting is expected to set the preparatory stage for the national party congress in late 2027, a key event for China’s political and economic direction.
Several articles called for enhanced safeguards in critical sectors, including food security, energy, water resources, cybersecurity, and biosecurity. They also advocated for stricter regulation of artificial intelligence and stronger protections for Chinese individuals and entities operating abroad.
The commentary stressed the need for vigilance and strategic foresight: “We must remain confident and rise to the challenges … strengthen bottom-line thinking, effectively prevent and defuse various risks, and enhance economic and social resilience,” one article stated.
This multi-pronged approach outlined in the series signals Beijing’s intent to solidify its economic foundation while addressing emerging vulnerabilities within a rapidly shifting global landscape.
