The Yeni Paper Mill in Yeni, Bago Region, is currently conducting trials to produce paper pulp from various bamboo species, officials confirmed. The experimental work aims to explore the potential of bamboo as a raw material for pulp production, which could support local paper manufacturing industries.

Union Minister for Industry and MSME Development Dr. Charlie Than visited the mill on August 2 to review the ongoing research. During his inspection, he emphasized the importance of maintaining detailed records of the trial processes and urged officials to evaluate the commercial feasibility of using bamboo pulp in paper production. Dr. Than also highlighted the need to prepare for the eventual transfer of these technologies to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to encourage wider adoption.

In addition to the bamboo pulp trials, the Union Minister called for enhanced technical support to boost domestic production of digesters, critical equipment used in the paper manufacturing process. This move is part of a broader effort to strengthen local supply chains for paper production machinery.

Dr. Charlie Than’s visit also included inspections of packaging paper production at the 20-tonne capacity Yeni Paper Mill, as well as operations at KKN Tissue and Golden Bamboo Chopstick Enterprise facilities located in Myohla, Yedashe Township. Further, he reviewed the installation of machinery at the 50-tonne YDE Pulp and Paper Company Limited mill and observed the functioning of the 50-tonne Kyaw Moe Naing Family rice mill.

Throughout his visit, the Union Minister provided guidance on improving operational efficiency and addressed challenges raised by MSME entrepreneurs. The government intends to continue supporting these industries to strengthen Myanmar’s industrial sector and promote sustainable local manufacturing.
