Sydney Swans forward Tom Papley is edging closer to a return for next Thursday night’s key AFL match against Fremantle in Perth after recovering from a calf strain. Coach Dean Cox indicated Papley has met all the necessary milestones in his rehabilitation, including a demanding training session on Friday, but stopped short of confirming his selection.

The Swans will face the Dockers following a six-day break and are buoyed by a convincing 35-point victory over the Western Bulldogs at the Sydney Cricket Ground last Friday. The win was marked by a restructured forward line, which, while missing several players due to injury and omission, effectively pressured the Bulldogs’ defense.

Papley’s potential return is seen as crucial to adding pace to the forward setup, which recently benefited from the strong marking ability of Charlie Curnow, who kicked six goals, and Hayden McLean, who contributed three. However, the Swans remain without key forwards Logan McDonald (quad) and Peter Ladhams (groin), both of whom sustained setbacks during the week and missed the Bulldogs game. Joel Amartey is still sidelined with a partial Achilles tendon tear, and small forward Malcolm Rosas Jr. was omitted from the lineup.

Cox acknowledged that McDonald and Ladhams remain doubtful for the upcoming trip to Perth but expressed optimism about Papley’s availability. “He has done everything he needs to do to put his hand up,” Cox said. “Hopefully he’s done enough.”

The Swans will monitor the fitness of their forward options closely in the lead-up to what promises to be a pivotal match at Optus Stadium against Fremantle, with both teams vying for top position on the ladder.
