Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has indicated uncertainty about continuing his international career following a 10-match suspension handed down for his involvement in a post-World Cup final brawl. The 32-year-old also cited Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football as a significant factor in his decision-making process.

The incident occurred in August at the conclusion of the World Cup final, where Argentina was defeated by Spain. Tensions escalated at the final whistle when Paredes pushed Spanish midfielder Gavi to the ground as Spain’s substitutes stormed the pitch in celebration. The altercation led to Paredes receiving a 10-match suspension from international play. Alongside the suspension, Paredes faced three assault charges and was fined US$90,000. His teammate Nahuel Molina was also fined the same amount and faced two assault charges related to the same incident.

Speaking to Argentine media on Tuesday, Paredes acknowledged the challenges ahead. “It’s going to be difficult for me to stay with the national team,” he said, referencing both the suspension and Messi’s decision to step away from international competition. “I haven’t discussed it with the coach (Lionel Scaloni) yet, but we’ll talk about it and see what decision I make.”

Paredes emphasized Messi’s impact on the team and his legacy in Argentina’s football history. He described Messi’s achievements as emblematic of perseverance and the realisation of hard-earned dreams. “Leo’s legacy will live on forever because of what he achieved, for never giving up and for showing that dreams are hard-won, pursued and, in the end, fulfilled,” Paredes said. He also noted that although the team had anticipated the possibility of the final being Messi’s last match, the reality of his retirement was still difficult to accept.
