The parents of an Arizona State University hockey player who collapsed during an outdoor workout have called for the suspension of the coaches involved until an independent investigation is completed. John and Christina Mayich made the request through the family’s attorney on Tuesday, supporting a similar appeal from seven Arizona State hockey players who wrote anonymously to university president Michael Crow earlier this week.

The players’ letter, sent on Monday via legal counsel due to fears of retaliation from coaching staff, urged the university to place the coaches responsible for the August 20 workout on administrative leave. The workout took place outdoors on the first day that the NCAA permits official team activities. Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old defenseman and St. Louis Blues draft pick, collapsed during the session from external heat stroke that severely impaired oxygen flow to his brain. According to the family’s attorney, Rob Carey, Matthew’s condition is unlikely to improve.

In their statement, the Mayich family emphasized their continued support for the team’s success but stressed the need for accountability and player safety. “We want this team to have a great season and we’ll be cheering for you,” the statement said. “But the coaches who ran that workout on Aug. 20 need to be removed while an independent investigation gets to the truth. The players shouldn’t have to worry about retaliation from the people they report to every day.”

The players’ letter also highlighted concerns about inconsistencies in an initial university-led investigation and requested that an interim coaching staff be appointed if the current coaches are suspended. The Mayich family reinforced that their priority is an environment where players can focus on hockey without fear of retribution. “Mostly, we want accountability for what happened to our son, and we want his teammates to be safe,” their attorney said.

Arizona State police are currently investigating the incident, with the case expected to be forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for independent review upon completion. The state’s House and Senate education committee chairs have also called for an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the workout after reviewing the players’ letter.
