English Heritage has introduced a new initiative designed to ease summer outings for families by offering free replacement ice creams to visitors who accidentally drop their cones. The "splat insurance" program, available at 18 locations across England, including Scarborough Castle and Battle Abbey in East Sussex, aims to prevent the disappointment that can follow a dropped treat.
Under the scheme, visitors who purchase a Northern Bloc ice cream and subsequently drop it can return to the point of sale with the fallen cone or cup and request a replacement at no extra cost. The initiative, which runs through August 31, reflects an effort to enhance the overall experience at English Heritage sites during the warmer months.
Ruth Brill, a mother of two, praised the program, describing it as “absolutely amazing” and acknowledging how upsetting it can be for children to lose their ice cream. However, she expressed some concern that the offer might be misused, emphasizing the importance of honesty in its use. Similarly, Sharon Colback of Tunbridge Wells called dropping an ice cream a “heinous crime” and admitted she had never taken advantage of such offers herself, though she joked about the temptation to do so.
Other parents welcomed the scheme as a practical response to a common summer mishap. Anthony Kent from Five Oak Green recounted his daughter's experience of dropping an ice cream and called the program a “brilliant idea” that could make outings less stressful for families.
The launch of this initiative follows an English Heritage survey revealing that a majority of people—68 percent—would feel too polite or embarrassed to ask for a replacement ice cream if theirs fell on the ground. The poll also highlighted generational differences in willingness to request a new treat, with 27 percent of Generation Z and 22 percent of Millennials open to doing so, compared with just 16 percent of Baby Boomers.
Daisy Rowe, English Heritage’s head of commercial development, said ice cream is a “highlight of a summer day out” but acknowledged the frustration when it ends up on the floor. She expressed the organization’s pleasure in offering the splat insurance to help families maintain enjoyable experiences during their visits.
The offer is available at multiple English Heritage sites nationwide until the end of August, providing an added layer of reassurance for parents and children alike during the peak summer season.
