Parents have expressed growing concern over the safety of children using Roblox, a popular online gaming platform. Susie Masterson, 51, shared her family’s experience after her son created an account on Roblox at the age of nine. Initially, the platform appeared harmless, but her husband raised concerns about the site’s user-generated content and potential risks.
The couple engaged in frequent conversations with their son to better understand his interactions on the platform. They discovered that he was often approached by strangers who solicited inappropriate and sensitive information. These individuals also attempted to lure him to other social media platforms, such as Telegram and Discord, which are less regulated.
Masterson recalled her son describing these encounters as being “taken down a dark alley” or into “a dark corner” within the virtual space. Although he said he did not share any worrying information with strangers, the experiences made him feel “uncomfortable.” Following these events, he stopped playing on Roblox.
This case highlights broader concerns about the safety of children on platforms that rely heavily on user-generated content and allow communication with unknown users. Experts and parents alike urge for increased awareness and stronger safety measures to protect young users from online predators and inappropriate interactions. Roblox representatives have said they continue to invest in safety technologies and community standards aimed at preventing such occurrences, though some parents remain skeptical about their effectiveness.
The challenges faced by families like the Mastersons underscore the complex balance between fostering digital engagement for children and ensuring their protection in an increasingly interactive online landscape.
