Authorities in Reading have seized more than 320 squishy sensory toys in a recent trading standards operation due to safety concerns. The toys, including counterfeit items mimicking the Fanta brand, were confiscated after reports emerged that some emitted a chemical odor and did not comply with UK safety regulations.
The seized products lacked essential UK safety markings and traceability information, distinguishing them from genuine Fanta-branded toys authorized for sale. Officials warned that while these types of squishy toys might seem harmless, those failing to meet safety standards could pose health risks, especially if damaged or improperly handled.
Parents have been advised to discontinue the use of any squishy toys that show signs of leaking, splitting, or other damage. Additionally, authorities cautioned against heating or tampering with the toys, which could increase the risk of exposure to harmful substances.
Reading Borough Council emphasized the importance of purchasing toys from reputable retailers to ensure compliance with safety requirements. Councillor Finn McGoldrick highlighted the need for vigilance when selecting toys for children, stating, “Make sure any toys purchased are from reputable retailers.”
