Wrexham secured a decisive 4-1 victory over Preston North End on Saturday, moving up to 14th place in the league and easing mounting pressure on manager Phil Parkinson.

The win, achieved at Wrexham’s home ground, came just days after their defeat to West Bromwich Albion left the club near the bottom of the table and sparked speculation linking Steven Gerrard with the managerial role. Instead of succumbing to that pressure, Wrexham delivered a commanding performance against the last-placed Preston side.

Joe Worrall opened the scoring for Wrexham with a headed goal, marking his first strike in nearly two years since joining the club in the summer from Burnley. Preston responded swiftly as Alfie Devine capitalized on a turnover to level the score. However, Wrexham pulled ahead through Ben Whiteman, who struck a low shot into the net against his former club following a partially cleared cross. Sam Smith and Kieffer Moore added two more goals around the hour mark, with Smith heading in from a corner and Moore finishing off the match with a close-range flick from a free-kick delivery.

Parkinson praised his squad’s response following their recent setback. “I thought the lads stood up and were counted today individually and collectively,” he said. “It was great to get back in with the lads on Thursday, galvanise the group, and look at the detail of where we needed to improve, and I thought the lads implemented it.” The manager highlighted the team’s display of character and mentality as a key factor in the victory.

The home crowd showed strong support for Parkinson prior to kickoff, reflecting confidence in his leadership despite the turbulent week. Parkinson, 58, acknowledged the emotional toll of defeats but emphasized his long-standing commitment to the managerial challenges. “Defeats hurt as much as my first ever when I was Colchester manager, which is good, because you don’t want to ever accept it, but you kind of get rid of the disappointment quicker,” he noted.

Preston had early opportunities, with a near miss by Callum O’Hare and a header cleared off the line by Worrall, but they were unable to sustain sustained pressure. Defensively vulnerable throughout the match, Wrexham registered only their second clean sheet of the season in a previous draw against Swansea, but this outing they produced a solid team effort, limiting Preston’s chances especially in the second half.

With this win, Wrexham gained crucial momentum as they look to climb away from the relegation zone, while Preston remains at the foot of the table, facing a challenging run in the coming weeks.
