Malaysia has advanced to second place globally in passport strength, a development that underscores international confidence in the country’s stability, security, and institutional integrity, according to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. The updated ranking, released in 2026, marks an improvement from Malaysia’s third-place position the previous year.

The minister highlighted that this elevated ranking not only symbolizes global trust but also translates into practical benefits for Malaysian citizens by broadening their access to international travel. Holders of Malaysian passports can now enter 175 destinations worldwide, enhancing opportunities in education, careers, business, and investment.

“Among key focuses under the Madani Economy framework is to raise the country’s growth ceiling by expanding its international reach, strengthening its diplomatic standing and enhancing Malaysia’s competitiveness on the world stage,” Saifuddin wrote in a statement on Facebook.

The Home Minister attributed the passport’s rising status to persistent efforts by the Home Ministry and the Immigration Department to ensure the security and integrity of the nation’s immigration system and travel documentation. These agencies remain committed to safeguarding the quality and trustworthiness of Malaysian passports, aiming to maintain their respected position internationally.

Saifuddin further noted that the improved passport ranking facilitates entrepreneurial ventures by making it easier for Malaysian businesspeople to explore foreign markets and establish international networks, thereby fostering economic growth and investment.

He emphasized that the recognition provides motivation for continued improvements within the ministry, including strengthening institutional integrity, enhancing operational efficiency, and elevating the quality of public services delivered to Malaysian citizens.

This development reflects a broader governmental strategy to boost Malaysia’s global standing in line with the objectives of the Madani Economy framework and positions the nation favorably amid increasing international mobility and economic interconnectedness.
