New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson will miss multiple weeks after reinjuring a high ankle sprain, sidelining him for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. The injury, confirmed by tests conducted Monday, occurred during the Patriots’ 45-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders when Henderson left the game after accumulating 22 yards on four carries. The team does not expect the injury to require surgery.

Henderson’s absence further strains an already depleted New England backfield. With Rhamondre Stevenson assuming the primary workload at running back, depth behind him is notably limited. Corey Kiner remains the only other healthy running back on the roster, prompting the Patriots to likely explore options on the practice squad and free agency to bolster their depth.

Henderson, a second-year player out of Ohio State, made an immediate impact as a rookie, averaging 5.1 yards per carry—the highest mark among running backs league-wide in his first season. However, his production has declined in 2023, with a current average of 3.9 yards per carry. Stevenson, meanwhile, has managed a 4.0-yard average and appears to have a stronger role in the passing game. Additionally, Stevenson serves as the primary pass blocker, a facet of the game where Henderson has struggled.

The running back injury compounds New England’s offensive challenges, coming soon after head coach Mike Vrabel indicated there is little chance wide receiver A.J. Brown will return for the Jets game. Brown has been sidelined since sustaining an ankle injury in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.

To help offset offensive losses, the Patriots recently signed receiver Romeo Doubs in free agency. However, Doubs has yet to make a significant impact, recording just one catch for 16 yards on three targets in last week’s game, where he operated as the team’s primary receiver.

Despite these setbacks, New England enters the upcoming matchup following consecutive victories over the Buffalo Bills and the Raiders. The team will rely heavily on Stevenson and its remaining healthy contributors to maintain offensive rhythm in the absence of key players.
