Paul Pelosi, husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run and an infraction for making an unlawful turn in Napa County, authorities announced Friday. The charges relate to a July 3 traffic incident in Yountville, California, where Pelosi allegedly struck a parked, unoccupied vehicle and left the scene without providing required information.

According to the Napa County Sheriff's Office, the collision occurred on Yount Street in the 6700 block. A witness reported that Pelosi was driving north when he briefly stopped following the crash but then drove away. The parked vehicle sustained significant rear-end damage, and its front tire was pushed onto the curb.

Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley stated that Pelosi, 86, of St. Helena, faces a misdemeanor charge of hit-and-run, which carries a maximum probation term of one year in California, as well as an infraction for making an unlawful turn. Pelosi is scheduled to appear in court on August 13.

This is not Pelosi’s first legal issue related to driving. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence in Napa County. At that time, he was sentenced to five days in jail and placed on probation for three years. Conditions of his probation included the installation of an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he operates, enrollment in a three-month DUI program, and payment of approximately $5,000 in restitution to a victim.

District Attorney Haley addressed questions regarding the absence of DUI charges in this case and Pelosi’s continued driving privileges. She emphasized that prosecutors must file charges they can prove beyond a reasonable doubt based on available evidence, and no indication of intoxication was presented. However, the district attorney’s office said it may seek a reevaluation of Pelosi’s driving privileges through the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Pelosi’s prior legal history includes a 2022 assault during which he was severely beaten with a hammer at the couple’s San Francisco residence.

The current charges come amid increased public scrutiny following the earlier DUI conviction. Napa authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the July 3 incident.
