Dr. Paul S. Russell, a pioneering figure in transplant surgery whose career spanned more than seven decades, died on August 22 at his home in Westwood. He was 101. His death was confirmed by Dr. Richard N. Pierson III, his son-in-law and a transplant surgeon.

Dr. Russell’s long-standing association with Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass General) began in the mid-20th century and extended well into his later years. Named in his honor, the Russell Rounds—weekly discussions held at the hospital where transplant doctors review complex cases—were a fixture he regularly attended into his 90s. Colleagues remembered him for his keen intellect and probing questions during these sessions.

Appointed chief of surgery at Mass General in 1962, Dr. Russell performed the institution’s first kidney transplant the following year. He later served as director of the hospital’s transplantation unit from 1968 to 1990. When Dr. Russell entered the field, transplant surgeries were fraught with risk, and most donated organs came from genetically similar relatives to minimize rejection. He played a crucial role in bridging laboratory advances in immunosuppression with clinical practice, helping transform organ transplantation from a high-risk experimental procedure into a more widely successful treatment.

“Paul had this unusual talent of being able to recognize early on when something was discovered that, this is important,” said Dr. A. Benedict Cosimi, who succeeded Dr. Russell as head of Mass General’s transplant program. Many early breakthroughs originated in animal studies, but Dr. Russell was instrumental in translating these findings into practical therapies for human patients.

In the 1960s, Dr. Russell established a laboratory focused on transplantation biology, which has since evolved into the hospital’s Center for Transplantation Sciences. This center now encompasses 80 specialists working across 19 laboratories. While early transplant outcomes were bleak—with survival rates below 20 percent—Dr. Russell’s iterative approach to surgery and patient care steadily improved results, raising survival rates to between 40 and 50 percent by the end of that decade, according to Pierson.

Recognizing the growing complexity of organ matching and procurement as demand increased, Dr. Russell founded the Boston Interhospital Organ Bank in 1968. This organization has expanded significantly, now known as New England Donor Services, collaborating with nearly 200 hospitals across six states and Bermuda to coordinate organ donation and transplantation.

Dr. Russell also dedicated much of his career to education, serving as a professor at Harvard Medical School from 1962 onward. He was named the John Homans Distinguished Professor of Surgery in 1998 and was influential in training generations of surgeons and scientists in the field.

His legacy includes recent breakthroughs at Mass General, where in 2024 surgeons completed the world’s first transplant of a pig kidney into a human recipient, a milestone aimed at addressing the persistent shortage of donor organs. Dr. Tatsuo Kawai, who led the procedure, emphasized that the success was built on decades of collective scientific effort, much of which was grounded in Dr. Russell’s early work.
