Experts warn that the common assumption that a five-seat car can safely accommodate five adults plus luggage is frequently inaccurate. For example, five adults weighing an average of 80 kilograms each total 400 kilograms. Adding even a single 30-kilogram suitcase brings the overall load to 430 kilograms, often exceeding the legal limits of many family cars and SUVs, which typically have payload capacities ranging from 390 to 400 kilograms.
This excess weight poses significant safety risks. Increased load affects braking distances, making it harder to stop quickly in emergencies. Overloaded vehicles are prone to brake overheating, especially on long downhill stretches, which can lead to brake failure. Additionally, excess weight causes the rear suspension to sag and the front end to lift, diminishing steering responsiveness. The added stress also raises tyre temperatures, increasing the likelihood of dangerous blowouts at highway speeds.
Besides safety hazards, overloading a vehicle carries legal consequences. Authorities may issue fines, demerit points, or even impound vehicles found to be carrying loads beyond their certified limits. From an insurance standpoint, damage claims might be denied if an accident occurs while the vehicle is overloaded.
