PC Tara Sampson, a 24-year-old police officer with Greater Manchester Police, is seeking to become the next Miss England after reaching the final stage of the Miss North West competition. Sampson, who has been with the force for over a year, took part in the regional pageant held at the Park Hall Hotel & Spa in Chorley, Lancashire, marking her first experience in a beauty contest.

Originally from Chorley, Sampson described the transition from police uniform to evening gown as a significant change. While her daily work exposes her to high-pressure and challenging situations, she said walking the catwalk and participating in interviews for the pageant pushed her beyond her comfort zone in different ways. “Being a police officer means having to be out of your comfort zone almost every day,” she said, adding that her professional skills, such as staying composed under pressure and adaptability, can be assets in the pageant world.

Sampson’s entry into the competition was partly inspired by the pageant’s “Beauty with a Purpose” motto, which emphasizes charitable work alongside physical presentation. She expressed enthusiasm about fundraising opportunities and the chance to represent causes she cares about through the contest. Before joining the police, she worked in a prison where she developed skills in communication and conflict resolution, experiences she believes complement both her policing and pageant efforts.

The Miss North West competition includes rounds that test talent, sports ability, and community involvement. At least three finalists from the region will advance to the Miss England grand final scheduled for November 17 in Leicester. Sampson acknowledged the challenge ahead but said she embraced the chance to “get out of my big heavy uniform and get glammed up,” describing herself as “a very girly girl at heart.”

Miss England director Angie Beasley noted the strong track record of contestants from the North West, many of whom have gone on to international success. She highlighted the unique nature of Sampson’s participation, saying that having a serving police officer in the competition would be “something else.”

The regional North West Beauty Awards event is set to take place in Salford on September 26, where further selections for the Miss England final will be made. Sampson’s participation reflects a growing trend of contestants from diverse professional backgrounds stepping into the pageant arena.
