Ukraine and Russia are expected to hold peace talks within the coming days, with a summit likely to take place in Abu Dhabi around November 10, following the conclusion of the United States midterm elections. President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed Kyiv’s readiness to engage in negotiations on a wide range of topics, including sensitive issues, emphasizing the importance of maintaining dialogue despite ongoing challenges.
The planned discussions mark a potential step toward resolving the conflict between the two countries, which has persisted since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. Originally, the talks were anticipated toward the end of November, but Ukraine has pushed for an earlier meeting.
Zelensky also commented on the shifts in international dynamics impacting the negotiation process. He urged former U.S. President Donald Trump to cease policies perceived as overly accommodating toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling for a stronger recognition of Moscow’s role as the aggressor in the conflict. “If the United States, our strong partner, understands that Putin’s goal is to occupy us and to destroy us, they can’t be on Putin’s side,” Zelensky stated.
Despite some optimism about initiating face-to-face negotiations, Zelensky acknowledged uncertainty about the prospects for de-escalation. He noted the complexity of the conflict, saying that outcomes depend largely on the intentions of various countries and leaders involved. At the same time, he expressed appreciation for U.S. efforts to facilitate a trilateral meeting, while cautioning that meaningful progress requires focused attention on ending the war.
Relations between Kyiv and Washington have reportedly become more strained recently, with U.S. foreign policy priorities shifting toward developments in the Middle East. Zelensky highlighted the need for sustained international commitment, underscoring that ending the conflict demands ongoing engagement from all parties. The coming peace talks will test whether renewed diplomatic efforts can translate into tangible steps toward resolution amid a complex and evolving geopolitical landscape.
