Wigan Warriors secured a narrow 16-14 victory over St Helens at the Magic Weekend event held at Hill Dickinson Stadium, overcoming a squad significantly affected by injuries. The win was sealed through second-half tries by Jai Field and Zach Eckersley, helping Wigan maintain their lead despite a late surge from St Helens.
Jackson Hastings came close to forcing the game into overtime with a long-range penalty attempt after the final siren, but his kick missed, ensuring Wigan’s triumph. Head coach Matt Peet praised his team’s resilience and character in a match that he described as far from polished.
“We had people playing out of position all over the place, but I didn’t feel that we were broken down,” Peet said. “It was not a pretty game but we got the job done through character and because we’ve got a really tough group of lads.” He highlighted the contributions of the younger players who stepped up to navigate the challenges posed by the injury crisis.
Despite the difficulties, Wigan demonstrated defensive solidity throughout the contest. Peet acknowledged the pressure his team faced, noting that “everything that went our way was getting tested in one way or another,” but emphasized satisfaction with how his squad held firm.
The result concluded the weekend’s fixtures on a positive note for Wigan, maintaining their competitive edge against a St Helens side that remained strong until the final moments.
