Scott Pendlebury is set to join the Gold Coast Suns on a four-year playing-coaching contract, aiming to extend his AFL career while pursuing senior coaching ambitions. The 38-year-old former Collingwood captain, who played 433 games with the Magpies, will move north as a delisted free agent, with the playing portion of his deal reported to be worth approximately $1.3 million over the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

Pendlebury’s manager, Anthony Panozzo, emphasized the player’s determination to contribute actively both on and off the field. “He is not going up there for a suntan and to sit on the beach,” Panozzo said, underscoring Pendlebury’s intent to have a meaningful impact. Pendlebury aims to assist the Suns in maximising the potential of their young, talented list, which he observed during Collingwood’s recent match against Gold Coast.

While he reportedly declined a more lucrative offer from Essendon, Pendlebury’s decision was influenced by his desire to relocate his family to Queensland and to work under the mentorship of triple-premiership coach Damien Hardwick. This move aligns with his longer-term goal of transitioning into senior coaching roles, with the possibility of accelerating into the coaching component of his Suns contract if he opts to reduce his playing commitments.

Pendlebury’s 2026 season was marked by careful management due to early Achilles tendon issues, which limited his game time. He will also face logistical challenges with the Suns’ demanding schedule, including 14 away games, and will have to carefully plan his travel. Notably, Pendlebury has yet to play at several AFL venues such as Darwin, Hobart, Launceston, and various Gather Round locations.

Among Collingwood supporters, reactions to his departure have been mixed. Many fans have expressed their support for Pendlebury’s move, understanding his motivations and future aspirations. However, some voiced disappointment that he did not arrange a formal farewell match or a celebratory lap of honour similar to other retiring AFL greats, such as Dustin Martin of Richmond. Pendlebury has stated he felt sufficiently honoured during his milestone 433-game celebration and preferred to let teammate Steele Sidebottom receive the spotlight in his final home round.

Pendlebury will participate in Collingwood’s farewell for Sidebottom at the upcoming Copeland Trophy event at Crown Casino and there is hope among the club’s officials that he may return to the Melbourne Cricket Ground next season to receive a proper send-off from Magpies supporters during a home game.

As he embarks on the next phase of his career with the Gold Coast Suns, Pendlebury’s blend of experience and coaching ambition will be closely watched by supporters and analysts alike.
