Penelope Cruz became visibly emotional at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday as she and co-star Javier Bardem received a lengthy standing ovation following the premiere of their new film, “Bunker.” Video footage captured the moment Cruz wiped away tears as the couple, who are married in real life, embraced and smiled together on stage.

The applause, reportedly lasting 16 minutes and 30 seconds, was notably longer than that of other festival entries, including "Wild Horse Nine," which received a 14-minute ovation at its debut. The film, directed by Florian Zeller, is a psychological thriller that centers on Miguel, played by Bardem, a London architect commissioned to design a survival bunker for a wealthy technology billionaire. The project strains his 17-year marriage to Sofia, portrayed by Cruz, as the couple grapples with issues of wealth, fear, and growing paranoia.

“Bunker” also features performances from Stephen Graham, Paul Dano, and Patrick Schwarzenegger. In his director’s statement at the festival, Zeller commended Cruz and Bardem not only for their acting abilities but also for their dynamic as a real-life married couple. He said he aimed to explore complex themes of love, fidelity, and forgiveness while deliberately creating an ambiguous narrative for viewers.

Following its Venice debut, “Bunker” is set to be shown next at the Toronto International Film Festival, with a broader theatrical release planned for later this year.
