Koivunen, 23, was a restricted free agent prior to the agreement.

Originally from Finland, Koivunen joined the Penguins in March 2024 via a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes that sent Jake Guentzel to Carolina. Since joining Pittsburgh, Koivunen has contributed modestly, recording two goals and five assists over 39 games during the 2025-26 season.

The long-term deal reflects the franchise’s confidence in Koivunen’s potential to play a significant role in its future lineup, especially as stalwarts Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang continue to age.
