PepsiCo is set to remove artificial dyes from several key Gatorade flavors as part of a broader initiative to use natural ingredients and respond to growing regulatory and consumer pressure in the United States. Starting this autumn, the company will eliminate FD&C synthetic dyes from its Lemon Lime, Orange, and Fruit Punch varieties, which together represent about 35 percent of Gatorade’s nearly $10 billion in annual US sales.

The move follows increased scrutiny from US health authorities, including Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and various state legislators who have raised concerns about the potential behavioral effects of artificial dyes on children. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is overseeing commitments from multiple companies to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes by the end of 2027, though the deadline has been pushed back by a year.

PepsiCo plans to replace artificial coloring agents with natural pigments derived from vegetables. For instance, red tones in the Fruit Punch flavor will come from black carrots and purple sweet potatoes, while beta-carotene, found in carrots, sweet potatoes, and dark leafy greens, will provide orange and yellow hues in Lemon Lime and Orange flavors. However, the changeover has been complex due to agricultural supply constraints. Suppliers require up to 18 months’ advance notice to grow enough crops to fulfill demand, and natural sources currently cannot provide sufficient beta-carotene for the entire manufacturing volume.

Consequently, synthetic beta-carotene—approved by the FDA—will still be used in the Orange flavor for now, according to Damian Browne, PepsiCo’s senior vice president of research and development and North America beverages. The company continues efforts to fully transition to natural sources.

The reforms fit within PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta’s broader strategy to develop products with healthier ingredients. Similar changes include the removal of artificial colors and flavors in other PepsiCo staples like Lay’s potato chips. The packaged food and beverage industry is facing challenges from consumers seeking simpler ingredient lists and value after years of inflation, while competition has intensified with new entrants offering natural or health-focused hydration options.

Despite being the dominant player in the US sports drink market with a 61 percent share, Gatorade contends with rivals such as Coca-Cola’s BodyArmor and Powerade, as well as newer brands backed by health influencers and novel products like electrolyte-enhanced Capri Sun by Kraft Heinz.

PepsiCo recently refreshed the Gatorade brand, introducing lower-sugar options with natural colors and emphasizing scientifically backed hydration claims. A lower-sugar version launched earlier this year has generated over $100 million in sales, reinvigorating lapsed users.

Gatorade’s legacy dates back to its invention in 1965 by Dr. Robert Cade at the University of Florida, created to replenish college football players’ electrolytes. The brand remains closely associated with athletic performance and cultural moments such as the “Gatorade shower” after football games. Its vibrant colors have become an essential part of its identity, helping consumers recognize flavors even without tasting.

However, replacing synthetic dyes with natural alternatives entails challenges beyond supply. Natural pigments can react differently to heat and light and may impact flavor profiles. Blue Gatorade varieties continue to use synthetic dyes because available natural blue pigments have distinctive tastes that could alter the product. PepsiCo researchers remain committed to developing a stable natural blue dye but acknowledge the difficulty.

Consumer perceptions also complicate messaging around the reformulation. Analysts note the company must carefully promote the switch without implying previous formulations were inferior, a challenge for marketing strategies aiming to balance tradition and innovation.
