Perak state officials are exploring various measures to address the challenges posed by an ageing population as part of preparations for the 2027 budget. Sandrea Ng, chairman of the state housing and local government committee, said ongoing studies focus on upgrading existing housing to better accommodate the needs of senior citizens.

Speaking after a mobile service counter event at Kampung Baru Lawan Kuda, Ng highlighted that while the state has yet to establish a concrete metric to gauge its readiness for demographic shifts, several initiatives are underway across different government portfolios. She noted that health-related efforts will include programmes aimed at raising awareness and encouraging regular health screenings among the elderly, led by the official in charge of the health portfolio.

Under the welfare portfolio, plans are being considered to enhance support for senior citizens by expanding activity centres and increasing financial allocations dedicated to their welfare. Meanwhile, Ng’s own portfolio is concentrating on modifying existing residential buildings to ensure safer and more accessible living conditions for older residents.

Ng detailed a collaborative pilot project with a university that seeks to implement cost-effective retrofitting solutions to adapt current housing. The modifications would focus on improving safety and mobility, addressing common risks faced by the elderly such as falls and slips. The state is also aiming to integrate such age-friendly features into both new housing developments and renovations of existing homes.

Emphasizing the potential market benefit, Ng urged property developers to consider these adaptations as an appealing selling point in light of the growing senior population. The ongoing initiatives reflect Perak’s broader commitment to creating inclusive environments that support its ageing residents.
