Liverpool’s new manager Andoni Iraola has already earned praise from left-back Milos Kerkez, who believes the coach’s intense, high-pressing style will provide a crucial boost as the club seeks to address defensive issues from last season.

Kerkez, speaking from Chicago where Liverpool are currently holding their pre-season training, described Iraola as an ideal fit for the team’s ambitions. The defender, who joined Liverpool for around £40 million just a year ago, previously played under Iraola at Bournemouth, where the Spanish coach encouraged him to develop as an attacking full-back while maintaining defensive discipline.

“I was delighted when Iraola was appointed,” said Kerkez. “I worked with him before and he improved me a lot during those two years. Everyone knows the style he plays, and I think he is the perfect fit for us.”

The Serbian-born player emphasized Iraola’s focus on intensity and professionalism. “He’s not scared to play one-on-one across the pitch, to press high and always be on the front foot,” Kerkez explained. He detailed the rigorous training regime, noting that the work is physically demanding and includes drills with immediate consequences for losing teams, such as extra running based on Iraola’s decision.

Kerkez also highlighted Iraola’s approach to leadership and squad dynamics. “He likes to keep it professional, not getting too close to players, ensuring that everyone is treated equally and that hard work is the priority,” he said.

On the tactical side, Kerkez reiterated the importance Iraola places on defensive duties for full-backs. “Defending is really important to him,” the Liverpool player noted. “You need to defend hard first, and then anything you do going forward is a bonus. When you do your job well, you’re free to express yourself.”

Reflecting on their time at Bournemouth, Kerkez credited their team success to Iraola’s system and the freedom he allows players once defensive responsibilities are met. “We weren’t just playing well individually; we had a good team dynamic. He lets you be more free to do your stuff.”

Kerkez said many Liverpool players were adapting to Iraola’s methods during pre-season and growing stronger in training sessions. “The guys like how he works. It is going to suit the team perfectly,” he said.

He also welcomed the opportunity to assert more leadership within what he called a “new generation” forming under Iraola’s guidance. “I don’t care about pressure,” he added. “It’s your job. Just do your own job.”
