Egypt secured their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout round by defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time on July 4 in Atlanta. The match marked Egypt’s fourth appearance at the tournament and continued Australia’s streak of knockout stage losses, now standing at three.
In regulation play, Emam Ashour opened the scoring for Egypt in the 13th minute with a header past Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach. Australia leveled the match in the 55th minute under unusual circumstances when Egypt defender Mohamed Hany scored an own goal, becoming the first player in World Cup history to register two own goals in the same tournament. Hany had previously scored an own goal during Egypt’s group stage match against Belgium.
The Australian equalizer came from a free kick delivered by Aiden O’Neill, which Hany unintentionally deflected into his own net. Earlier in the second half, Hany appeared to suffer a head injury following a collision but continued after a concussion check. Egypt’s Omar Marmoush missed a chance to double the lead early in the second half, firing wide.
Late in extra time, Australia substituted their starting goalkeeper Beach, who had made several notable saves, including a sprawling stop on a header from Ramy Rabia and another save on Mohamed Salah’s shot, both in the final moments of regulation. The veteran Mathew Ryan, making his 105th international appearance, entered for the shootout but was unable to stop any of Egypt’s four penalty attempts.
The penalty shootout saw Australia begin poorly as Harry Souttar missed the opening kick, sending his shot over the crossbar. Australia converted two penalties through Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil, while Egypt converted four, with goal scorers including Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah—who started despite carrying a hamstring injury sustained in the group stage—and Hossam Abdelmaguid, who scored the decisive penalty. The match also featured an 18-year-old Australian, Lucas Herrington, who hit the crossbar with his penalty attempt.
With the win, Egypt advances to the round of 16 where they will face defending champions Argentina on Tuesday, also in Atlanta. Australia’s hopes of progressing remain unfulfilled, as this marks their third unsuccessful knockout round campaign.
