Canadian singer Abel Tesfaye, known professionally as The Weeknd, visited Hong Kong ahead of his scheduled performances at Kai Tak Stadium as part of his After Hours Til Dawn global tour. The four-night series of concerts is set to take place on October 24, 25, 30, and 31.
During his time in Hong Kong, The Weeknd met with renowned Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai and actress Carina Lau. The gathering, which took place on October 16, attracted attention on social media, particularly after Lau shared several photos of the meeting on October 17. In her post, Lau described the weekend as “perfect,” while one image revealed a thank-you note left by The Weeknd on the dinner menu, expressing gratitude to both Lau and Leung.
The Weeknd also posted a photo on his Instagram Stories showing him conversing with Leung. The post featured the 1994 song "Dream Lover" by Hong Kong singer Faye Wong, a Cantonese cover of The Cranberries’ 1992 hit "Dreams." The song holds cultural significance in Hong Kong cinema, having been featured in the film Chungking Express. Directed by Wong Kar Wai, Chungking Express starred Leung, Wong, and Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia, and earned Leung the Best Leading Actor award at the Golden Horse Awards that year.
Reports indicate that The Weeknd has demonstrated an interest in Hong Kong culture prior to his visit. In late September, he shared Faye Wong’s album Fuzao (1996) on his social media accounts.
The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn tour began in Asia earlier this month, with performances in Singapore on October 2 and 3, followed by concerts in Goyang, South Korea, on October 7 and 8, and Bangkok from October 11 to 13. His upcoming shows in Hong Kong continue the artist’s international tour schedule.
