Marilyn, a longtime resident of Coterie and former high school English teacher, has recently received an outpouring of appreciation from former students following a feature about her life and career. Over more than 30 years, Marilyn dedicated herself to helping students discover their voices, both through writing and personal expression.

The renewed attention brought a wave of correspondence and visits. One former student sent Marilyn orchids in gratitude, while another paid a visit that extended from lunch until dinner. Among those reconnecting was Sal, a former pupil who credited Marilyn with influencing his adult activism and passion for literature, particularly Shakespeare.

During his visit, Marilyn took Sal on a tour of the Coterie community’s amenities, including the rooftop pool and local restaurants, as well as her two-bedroom residence. Their conversations underscored the enduring role educators can play in shaping lives.

At 92 years old, Marilyn continues to emphasize the importance of having a voice, a lesson she imparted to countless students over the decades. Sal expressed deep appreciation for her lasting impact, noting that she helped many find their voices.

Marilyn’s experience illustrates how the influence of dedicated teachers can extend far beyond the classroom and continue to resonate throughout their lives and the lives of those they have mentored.
