Tributes have been paid to Barbara Mullaney, a Cricklade pet shop owner who died following a serious car collision that is now being investigated as a suspected murder. Mullaney, who ran Animal Fayre in Wiltshire, was driving south on the B4696 near Royal Wootton Bassett when her vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a black Vauxhall Astra shortly after 6 p.m. on June 30.
The woman, reportedly in her seventies and driving an orange Peugeot, died at the scene. A 43-year-old man, initially arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving while impaired by drink or drugs, was subsequently re-arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder by Wiltshire police. A teenage female passenger in the man’s car sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital but has since been discharged.
Wiltshire police disclosed that they had received several reports from members of the public concerning the suspect prior to the crash. The force has also referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), due to its previous involvement with the individual.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, leading the investigation, confirmed that the collision is now being treated as a murder inquiry. He noted that the suspect’s next of kin had been informed and stressed that there was no ongoing risk to the public. Authorities are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage from vehicles in the vicinity, including areas around Cricklade High Street and Purton High Street on the day of the incident.
Community response has been significant, with numerous floral tributes appearing outside Animal Fayre since news of Mullaney’s death became public. Friends and relatives described her as a caring and vibrant individual, expressing deep shock and sadness.
One relative acknowledged the outpouring of community support, highlighting that hundreds had come forward with condolences and shared memories of Mullaney’s impact over the years. Another family member conveyed gratitude for the vast number of messages, visits, and other tributes received and spoke of the family’s ongoing devastation.
An IOPC spokesperson confirmed receipt of Wiltshire police’s referral and stated that an assessment would be conducted to determine any further necessary action.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to clarify the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
