PETRONAS LNG Ltd (PLL) is preparing to meet rising liquefied natural gas (LNG) demand across Asia through its diversified supply sources and increasing production capacity in Malaysia. The company is set to commission a new LNG plant in Sabah in 2027, adding two million tonnes to its portfolio.

Ezran Mahadzir, CEO of PLL, highlighted the company’s integrated LNG portfolio during the Gastech 2026 conference in Bangkok. In addition to the long-established Bintulu operations in Sarawak and supplies from Canada, the upcoming Sabah facility will enhance the company’s ability to offer reliable and flexible LNG supplies to various Asian markets.

Ezran noted that while mature markets such as Japan, South Korea, and China are approaching saturation in LNG demand, the fuel will remain significant due to expanding energy needs and ongoing efforts to reduce coal usage. He pointed out that these markets place high importance on supply reliability and flexibility, especially with growth in data center infrastructure.

In Southeast Asia, LNG demand is expected to grow amid more complex infrastructure challenges. Ezran emphasized PETRONAS’ expertise as an integrated energy company capable of supporting partners along the entire LNG value chain, including liquefaction and regasification processes. This comprehensive approach is seen as a key value proposition for regional partners.

Regarding LNG pricing, Ezran stated that long-term market fundamentals continue to revolve around supply and demand, whereas short-term price fluctuations are often driven by geopolitical events. He cited tensions surrounding Iran as an example which can cause temporary market volatility. Nonetheless, PETRONAS maintains a long-term outlook in its investment strategy, confident that its geographically and operationally diversified portfolio will help the company withstand short-term disruptions.

“We look at things from the long run. We believe that we are able to weather the storm,” Ezran said, underscoring the company’s confidence in its ability to navigate fluctuating market conditions while capitalizing on growing LNG demand in Asia.
