In his new book, *Drugs: The Story of Pharmacology*, Flower aims to explain the origins, mechanisms, and importance of drugs in human health, highlighting their role beyond everyday use to potential life-saving applications in extreme situations.

Flower begins by noting that drugs have been part of human history since prehistoric times, initially derived from plants but now predominantly synthesized through industrial chemistry. He points out that in the UK alone, more than 1.2 billion prescriptions are written annually, underscoring the widespread reliance on these active chemical substances.

To bring attention to their significance, Flower proposes an imaginative scenario in which an individual survives a plane or ship wreck and finds themselves stranded. Flower categorizes these drugs into three groups. The first group comprises medicines that correct or adjust physiological imbalances within the body, such as those regulating blood pressure or pain management. The second group targets infectious agents—including bacteria and parasites—critical in preventing or treating infections in a remote environment. The final category includes ‘lifestyle’ drugs, which may support general well-being and coping mechanisms under stressful survival conditions.
